This is a fun way to review vocabulary and may be used with all grade levels.
You can play by having your students stand by their desks or you can play in a circle (this is a better option for everyone can see the others)
Think of a lesson or theme for which you want students to review the vocabulary. For example: for Preschool you might want to review words that begin with a certain letter, for Elementary, you might want to review bones, for High School you might want to review elements from the Periodic Table.
How to begin:
Explain the instructions. “We are traveling around the world and everyone has to choose something to take. Things cannot be named twice so listen to what your classmates are taking.”
There’s a catch: “I will decide if you can travel with us or not depending on what you’re taking.” You will let only the students that name things related to your chosen theme (and that haven’t been mentioned before) travel with you.
Everyone stands up. The students accepted to travel will be able to sit down.
How to Play:
You should start. Don’t mention the chosen theme; simply say “I’m traveling around the world and I’m taking… a tibia.”
Now, it’s the first student’s turn, he should say, “I’m traveling around the world and I’m taking … ________ ” Depending on his answer, you’ll decide if he’s coming (and may now sit down) or not. For example: If he adds “… a passport” Then, he can’t travel. But if he adds, “… a femur”. Then, he can travel with you (now, he sits)
Then, continue with the next student, until 1st they all realize which is the condition that enables them to travel, and then everyone has sat down.
Note: With preschoolers you can simply state the theme from the beginning.
